Monson Heritage Day Aug. 30

    MONSON — Monson Heritage Day will be celebrated on Saturday, Aug. 30 with an open house at the Monson Museum and a special day for the children.
    The Monson Historical Society has completed a few more improvements in the building including a partial new ceiling in the museum area, new signage and additional items in the gift shop. The museum will be open from 9 a.m. – 3 p.m.

    A special addition is the newly-acquired 1911 Howe antique fire truck and the Monson Fire Department will also host an open house on Heritage Day.
    From 12-3 p.m., younger visitors will have a variety of activities to choose from including several related to the town’s Scandinavian heritage.
    Tables and hostesses will be available to help the youngster make hair wreaths, which is a traditional Midsummer event; painting Swedish wooden Dala horses, making a fairy house, decorating cookies, playing the Finnish game of molkky and learning Finnish dance steps with instructions provided by members of the Finnish Farmers Club.
    Youngsters can also look up their family tree in the research center with help from the museum staff, take part in a paper scavenger hunt in the museum and learn of Monson’s rich history. There will also be a tasting table with fruit soup, bullas, traditional Swedish cookies and punch.
