Buie School of Music recital Sunday

DOVER-FOXCROFT — A benefit cakewalk, special rendition of “Somewhere Over the Rainbow” and other surprises spice up the annual recital at the Buie School of Music this Father’s Day.
The public is invited to see music students of Lauralyn Buie perform Sunday June 15, at 5 p.m. at Hutchins Hall at 21 Pleasant Street. The program will be approximately 90 minutes and feature about thirty students of piano, voice, guitar, and African drums.

As a special treat, local actress Claire McBride of Milo will sing “Somewhere Over the Rainbow” in costume to promote the anticipated upcoming production of “The Wizard of Oz” at the Center Theatre.
On the lighter side, a duo, the Yum Yums – Paco and Taco from Mexico, Maine – will inject humor into the evening.
Admission is free. Refreshments follow the recital.
Afterwards, kids and adults will take chances at winning cakes. Participants pay $1 to take part in each round of the musical-chair-style event, with music supplied by the students. When the music stops, everyone sits down and someone will draw a number and, if it is the right number, they will win a cake. Proceeds will benefit Center Theatre’s efforts to stage “The Wizard of Oz.” Parents, the theatre and members of the public are welcome to donate cakes, homemade or not.
Buie, who has been teaching music locally since about 1990, used to do cakewalks as a kid growing up in Greenwood Springs, Miss., as fundraisers. They are “a lot of fun” and a bonus to seeing the kids perform at the recital.
