PCES plans year-end activities that celebrate learning
GUILFORD — Piscataquis Community Elementary School students and teachers have planned a number of events to celebrate learning. Parents and friends are encouraged to join some of the best free entertainment in the area. Events are held in the gymnasium unless otherwise noted.
On Thursday, May 15 PCES takes on the look of an art gallery as the walls are filled with an entire year’s worth of colorful projects and assignments. Parents and friends are invited to visit the school on Thursday, May 15 when the show will be open from 5-7 p.m. — an opportunity to enjoy great art and show support for the students’ efforts. The students’ work will remain in place for the school’s annual Arts Alive program on Friday, June 6.
Thursday, May 22 at 6 p.m. the PCES gym comes alive as third-graders exhibit their skills. In keeping with National Physical Education and Sports Month students will delight the audience with their body control, rhythm and sense of timing as they display their physical talents while tumbling, hula hooping, jump roping, manipulating a parachute, kicking up their heels in a country line dance piece, as well as performing the national dance of the Philippines known as “Tinikling.”
On Wednesday, May 28 the school is alive with the sound of music made by recorders, bands, and a chorus. Fourth-grade students have learned how to play the recorder this year and will be performing a set of songs that increase in difficulty. The students will perform up to the song they have mastered. Fifth- grade band members will be playing a few songs to show how much they’ve improved. Students in sixth- grade band have been playing for almost two years and will have three complex and fun songs to share. The fifth- and sixth-grade combined chorus is a large and energetic group that is really excited to close the Spring Concert this year. Join these talented kids 6 p.m. in the PCES gym.
On Thursday, June 12 the beat goes on with a very creative mix of percussion performances including recycled percussion, body percussion and traditional African songs with authentic instruments. This is the third year for the drumming program at PCES and sixth-graders have working very hard this year to put a fun program to demonstrate their skills. This sixth-grade showcase will include demonstrations of double dutch jump roping, ball handling skills using basketballs, advanced Tinikling that includes multiple dancers, juggling, tumbling and a surprise piece. The showcase begins at 6 p.m. in the PCES gym.
