GFWC/Miosac Club news
DOVER-FOXCROFT — GFWC/Miosac Club met at Thayer Parkway March 18 with 16 members present.
Program Chairman Barb Austin introduced Dr. Kathleen Harper, cardiologist at Mayo Regional Hospital. Dr. Harper talked about heart disease, how to prevent and symptoms. She spoke about the difference between stroke and heart attack. Dr. Harper stated that 80 percent of heart disease can be prevented with a healthy lifestyle. She mentioned many programs that are available at the hospital.
President Betsey Ryan called the meeting to order. and thanked hostess Austin. The collect, American’s Creed and Pledge of Allegiance was led by Athalie Burke. In the absence of the treasurer, Minnie McCormick took roll call. Last meeting minutes were omitted. Carol Kilpartick gave the treasurer’s report.
Roxy McGlauflin read thank you notes from McCormick for the cards she had received on the loss of her sister and hip surgery. A thank you letter from the PRYMCA thanking Miosac Club for its donation was also read.
McCormick, Newborns In Need chairman, reported that April 30 is the deadline for monies and items to be turned in so she can make the report at spring convention. McCormick also noted that the collection jar had reached a total of $40 to be used for baby care products to complete bags to be given to Newborns in Need.
Members were reminded to record their volunteer hours and of the Campbell soup label collection. Members are selling Sebec Lake Ice Out tickets. If you would like tickets call Roxy at 564-2067 or Brenda at 564-2660.
Austin and Elaine Larson spoke about the local high school art contest to be held Sunday, March 23 at the Dover-Foxcroft Congregational Church from 2-4 p.m. The public is invited, and there will be light refreshments. Winners of this art contest will go the District 3 Art Show, where they will go on to GFWC Maine Art Show.
Ryan announced the District 3 meeting and high school art show will be held April 5 at Jeff’s Catering in Brewer, and she said she has registration forms. She also announced she had forms for the Maud MacKenzie Scholarship Award and Educational Loan Fund. She was told they needed to get at Foxcroft Academy ASAP.
Spring convention forms are available. The convention will be at the Senator Hotel in Augusta May 8-9.
Fundraising ideas were presented. Members voted to hold a yard sale July 12 with a rain date of July 19 at the McGlauflin home on Lincoln Street. Carol Kilpartick presented another fundraising idea, a community business directory. Kilpatrick, Brenda Quiet, Cathie Goodine, Pat Jones and McGlauflin will serve on the committee.
Austin announced that the Project Linus Blanket Day will be April 26 at Penquis Higher Education Center on Mayo Street.
Ryan announced the nominating committee members, Austin, McCormick and Elaine Larson. She then asked for volunteers for advisory committee and budget. Pat Jones, McCormick and Mae Thompson will serve on that committee. Anne Cress announced a roast beef dinner will be held Saturday, March 22 at the Methodist Church from 4:30-6 p.m.
The meeting was adjourned and delicious refreshments were served.
