Protecting public health

To the Editor;

The Maine people recently voted as a large majority to keep the law regarding vaccinations intact. By doing so, they showed that the majority of Maine citizens believe that protecting the public’s health overrides the individual’s right to refuse vaccinations. Likewise, protecting oneself from getting infected by the covid virus protects the public’s health.

One person’s willingness to accept getting the infection shouldn’t override their sense of duty to protect their neighbors’, co-workers’ and family members’ health. Keep others safe by following the state’s current guidelines for preventing the spread of the covid virus, which at the time I am writing this includes masking and 6 feet distancing when in public places. These guidelines will be even more important as the state gradually resumes “normal” business activity and we all start interacting with others in person to a greater degree. And that should make us all feel a little better, even with the mask and distance between us.
