SeDoMoCha lends a hand for Socktober
DOVER-FOXCROFT — Students and staff throughout the SeDoMoCha School have been busy bringing in items for community residents in need by gathering warm clothing accessories and raising funds for Thanksgiving meals.
“We collected hats — we got a lot of hats which is awesome, mittens and gloves in addition to all the socks,” grade 7 science teacher/outreach committee head Cassidy Miller said on Nov. 1 in the SeDoMoCha School lobby next to a cart overflowing with the donated items.

For a 50-cent donation, students and staff could wear hats indoors with the more than $150 being raised to fund Thanksgiving dinner boxes for area residents in need.
She explained the month before was “Socktober,” as those in the building collected the items to be given to the Piscataquis Regional Food Center “so those can actually go out into our community.” She said a number of handmade hats and mittens came in, showing many put in effort for the clothing drive.
Miller said the numbers keep increasing but at last count 208 pairs of socks, seven scarves, 103 hats and 40 pairs of mittens and gloves came in.
On Nov. 1 students and staff were not only allowed to wear hats in school, but encouraged to do so. On “Hat Day” a small donation allowed a piece of headwear to be on all day. Miller said for the first time Hat Day was extended to all grades at SeDoMoCha.
“They paid 50 cents a piece so that’s a lot of hats,” Miller said with Hat Day raising more than $150 (over 300 individuals participated). “We are doing Thanksgiving boxes for people in our area,” she said. “Turkey, sides, rolls, dessert, a tin to cook the turkey in, the whole dinner.”
