Cooley and Wesley compete in state tennis tourney

PORTLAND — Piscataquis Community High School senior Eben Cooley and Foxcroft Academy junior Olivia Wesley took part in the 2019 MPA state tennis singles tourney, which began on May 24 at Apex Racket and Fitness. The pair earned bids to the tournament by winning qualifying matches, which put them in the top 48 boys and girls tennis players across all three classes of high school tennis.

In the first round Cooley defeated Gaston Fuksa of St. Dominic Academy of Auburn 6-2, 6-4. In the second round Cooley faced Thorne Kieffer of the Waynflete School of Portland, the No. 4 seed in the tourney. Kieffer won the match 6-0, 6-1.

In girls’ play, Wesley squared off against Lea Scrapchansky of Brunswick High School in the opening round. Scrapchansky won 6-3, 6-1.
