Beaudry tosses 1-hitter in Ponies’ win vs. John Bapst

DOVER-FOXCROFT — Baserunners were few and far between for John Bapst Memorial High School of Bangor during a May 21 Class B North softball game at Foxcroft Academy. The Ponies allowed just five players to get on base, with two coming on dropped third strikes and only two of the five getting into scoring position, in seven innings. Senior Makenzie Beaudry tossed a 1-hitter with zero walks and 15 strikeouts. The shutout is the team’s sixth in 13 games.

The two Crusaders getting to first after striking out came in the first and fourth innings, but Foxcroft (the team improved to 11-2 with its eighth consecutive victory over 4-8 John Bapst) prevented these players from causing any damage as only one got to second and she ended up being stranded there. In the top of the sixth John Bapst senior Hallie Rockress reached first on a fielding error as she beat the throw to first base.

RUN NO. 1 — Foxcroft Academy senior Cailin Seavey puts the Ponies on the board as she tagged up at third and scored on a sacrifice fly to leftfield by sophomore Sheryl Chase during the bottom of the first vs. John Bapst on May 21 (looking on is Pony junior Karis Dankert). Foxcroft won 6-0 to improve to 11-2, winning the team’s eighth consecutive game and posting the sixth shutout of 2019.

Rockress then stole second with the Ponies trying to get the out at the bag. The throw ended up landing in centerfield as Rockress ran to third and she then took a turn to try to score. The softball was relayed to senior catcher Cailin Seavey and she tagged the sliding baserunner in front of the plate for the out to end John Bapst’s best scoring opportunity.

With 1-out in the seventh, John Bapst would get its only hit of the afternoon with junior Jayda Smith beating out the throw to first for an infield single. When the Crusaders made contact, none of the balls reached beyond the permimeter the infield dirt.

Beaudry then induced a flyball to shortstop and she recorded her 15th and final strikeout to close out the win.

1-HITTER — Senior Makenzie Beaudry kept John Bapst swinging and missing all afternoon as she struck out 15 batters across seven innings while walking none. Foxcroft allowed just five baserunners all game, with only two of these Crusaders getting into scoring position.

Foxcroft would score the only needed runs during the team’s first trip to the plate. With the bases loaded, sophomore Sheryl Chase hit a sacrifice fly to leftfield to drive in Seavey. Junior Karis Dankert followed by singling to centerfield to enable sophomore Amber Richard to come home for the 2-0 lead.

The Ponies then scored in the fourth, fifth (plating a pair of runs then) and sixth innings to go ahead 6-0. Richard drove in senior Hannah Sprecher on a single in the fourth, and in the fifth junior Jenna Anderson’s pinch hit groundout drove in Dankert. Junior Natalie Robinson then scored on a wild pitch for a 5-0 lead.

In the home half of the sixth, Anderson’s infield pop fly with the bases loaded ended up landing on the dirt behind the pitcher’s mound as Beaudry ran home from third for run No. 6. Anderson had a contest-best two RBIs.

Seavey singled in three of her four at-bats to lead all players in hits. Dankert went 2-for-3 with a pair of singles and reaching on an error in her other trip to the plate. Sophomore Ava Rayfield reached base in three different ways in her three at-bats, being hit by pitch, walking and recording a single.
