Free screening of ‘RESILIENCE’ April 7 at Center Theatre

DOVER-FOXCROFT — The child may not remember, but the body remembers.

Please join your neighbors at the upcoming free screening of the documentary “RESILIENCE” at 2 p.m. on Sunday, April 7 at the Center Theatre. This film chronicles the research about the impact of toxic stress upon childhood development, and offers exciting new ways in which we all can work to promote resilience in all of our children – including our very youngest.

Researchers have recently discovered a dangerous biological syndrome caused by toxic stress during childhood. As the “RESILIENCE” documentary reveals, toxic stress can trigger hormones that wreak havoc on the brains and bodies of children. This puts children at a greater risk for school challenges, behavior problems, health issues like diabetes, asthma and obesity as well as problems extending into adulthood including homelessness, prison time, and even early death.

While the broader impacts of poverty worsen the risk, no segment of society is immune.

“Resilience,” however, also chronicles the dawn of a movement that is determined to fight back. Trailblazers in pediatrics, education and social welfare are using cutting-edge science and field-tested practices and therapies to protect children from the insidious effects of toxic stress. Strategies include things that everyone can do to support children and their families in everyday life, as well as clinical opportunities that will benefit some children with greater needs.

There will be a brief discussion with participants following the film. This film is of special interest to parents, soon-to-be parents, grandparents, educators, social service agencies and others who volunteer in the community and all who care about kids.
