Ninth-seeded Penquis knocks off No. 1 Dexter in a quarterfinal
DEXTER — A goal in each half to supplement a shutout effort by the defense helped the ninth-seeded Penquis Valley High School girls upset No. 1 Dexter Regional High School in a Class C North quarterfinal on the windy afternoon of Thursday, Oct. 25. The Patriots became the only team to defeat Dexter (14-1) this season.
Late in the opening half, Penquis senior striker Cymeria Robshaw had the ball inside box near the left side of the Dexter goal. Robshaw got a low shot off and the ball rolled in to break the scoreless stalemate at the 6:52-mark.
Robshaw would add an insurance goal in the final minutes of the second half. With about two minutes go she had the ball near the edge of the box. She shot the ball at the right side of the net and Robshaw hit the mark as Penquis led 2-0 with 1:48 to go.
In 14 regular season contests, Dexter scored fewer than three goals only once but the Patriot defense kept the opposition off the scoreboard — the team’s second shutout of the season. Senior keeper Katelyn Bolstridge made a game-high 13 saves, including several late in the second half when the score was still 1-0.
The previous Saturday Penquis stopped a 0-6-1 skid by winning 7-2 at eighth seed Bucksport High School in a preliminary round game. With the victory over Dexter, the Patriots improved to 7-7-2 and advanced to the semifinals for the second time in three years. The team was scheduled to face No. 4 Central High School (9-4-2) in a game Friday on the artificial turf at Husson University in Bangor.
The quarterfinal win came after Dexter swept the regular season matchups between the two programs located less than 30 miles apart. The Tigers won at home 11-2 on Sept. 4 and earned a 9-5 victory in Milo on Sept. 26.
Dexter seniors are Danielle Cummings, Kailee Deering, Hannah Dorman, Ashley Downing, Kaylee Harris, Addyson Herrick, Shannon O’Roak, Janette Patterson, and Morgan Smith.
