Dover–Foxcroft Kiwanis to honor PCHS Key Club

DOVER-FOXCROFT — The Dover-Foxcroft Kiwanis Club will host a reception for the Piscataquis Community High School Key Club at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan 29 at Foxcroft Academy. The reception will be held to officially welcome the PCHS Key Club to the Dover-Foxcroft Kiwanis family, said Kiwanis President Deb Somers.

Somers explained that Key Club International is the high school organization sponsored by Kiwanis International. Key Club assists Kiwanis in carrying out its mission to serve the children of the world. High school student members of Key Club perform acts of service in their communities, such as cleaning up parks, collecting clothing and organizing food drives. They also learn leadership skills by running meetings, planning projects and holding elected leadership positions at the club, district and international levels.

The PCHS Key Club has been without a Kiwanis club sponsor since the Guilford Area Kiwanis Club disbanded several years ago. “We became concerned that without a Kiwanis club to sponsor the PCHS Key Club, that Kiwanis International would no longer recognize the PCHS Key Club,” Somers said. This fall the Dover-Foxcroft Kiwanis Club voted to sponsor the PCHS as well as the Foxcroft Academy Key Club.

“We were impressed with how these kids held their club together without a Kiwanis sponsor,” said Past Lt. Gov. Bob Moore of the Dover-Foxcroft Kiwanis. “The Kiwanis is pleased with the support we have received from the both the teachers and staff of PCHS along with PCHS Key Club Advisor Emily Wilson.”

The Kiwanis Club would like to invite all members of the PCHS Key club, along with parents and friends, to the Jan 29 event, Somers said. For more information about the reception send e-mails to dennis_lyford@yahoo.com.
