August at Thompson Free Library

DOVER-FOXCROFT — There is stressful busy and there is exciting busy. We’re going for the latter this August at the Thompson Free Library and inviting you along for a fun, multidimensional, sensory-awakening ride. All ages — families and individuals — will find programs to make the most out of the dog days of summer.

Conjuring Carroll, the magician, will appear at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 1.

Strike up the band as in Dexter’s H. J. Crosby Community Band for great family entertainment at 6 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 2. They will perform outside so bring your blankets and chairs.

Curious about 3D printing? Now’s your chance to go from the abstract to the actual by attending the 3D Printer Workshop on from 5:30-7 p.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 7 led by STEM Guide Alicia Millette. This hands-on approach to cutting edge technology is open to the public.

More scientific pursuits on Wednesday, Aug. 8 at 10:30 a.m. as Mad Science presents “Sounds Like Science.” The Mad Science Maestro and Conductor take kids on an ear pleasing show about the science of sounds including how they travel through solids, liquids, and gases.

Well-known local photographer Steve Maines shares his photography tips and travel stories at 1:30 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 9. He will focus on his book, “Dancing with Spirit,” that he describes as “a real mix — exciting, inspirational and insightful” with over a hundred photos interwoven among the stories.

That same day at 2 p.m. kids can learn what watersheds are and why they are important thanks to Piscataquis Soil and Water Conservation District.

Wait, there’s more. The Ten Cent Book Sale starts from 4-7 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 9 and continues from 9 a.m.-5 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 10 and from 9 a.m.-1 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 11. Check your pockets, car and couch for extra change.

Science Camp returns Aug. 14-17 (10 a.m.-12 p.m. each day). Let Alicia Millette spark your child’s interest in one of the most important and interesting of human endeavors. Sign ups required, space is limited.

Let’s not forget about the arts. Spend an evening with poet, writer, editor and professor Wesley McNair at 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 21. This Maine poet laureate’s work sheds light on family conflict and the struggles of economic misfits — their dreams, failures, self-doubts and restlessness.

At 2 p.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 22 librarian Michelle Fagan teaches Rock Painting to all ages. Rocks and paints to be supplied.

Michelle will show ages grade 4 and up how to make awesome bracelets at 2 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 24.

Dover-Foxcroft resident Lisa Laser will be the Artist of the Month. Stop by and see her wonderful watercolor landscapes.

Finally, Bangor Daily News reporter and author Aislinn Sarnacki will visit the library on Thursday, August 30 to talk about her book “Maine Hikes Off the Beaten Path.” Get the inside scoop on trails waiting to be discovered from someone who writes about wildlife, conservation and outdoor recreation. Books will be available for purchase and signing.

If you’re hungry to learn and curious by nature, August at the Thompson Free Library is like an all you can eat buffet for the brain.
