Runners of all ages earn their treats at Maine Whoopie Pie Festival

DOVER-FOXCROFT — Once again the Maine Whoopie Pie Festival kicked off on the Saturday morning with the Piscataquis Regional YMCA’s Earn Your Whoopie Pie 3K and Kids’ 1K Fun Run, with both races starting on River Street on June 23. The younger competitors ran up and down the street and the 3K course ended on East Main Street after covering portions of River, Essex, Lincoln, Davis, Summer and North streets.

Cooper Nelson of Dover-Foxcroft, a rising junior with the University of Maine track program and a 2016 graduate of Foxcroft Academy, was the 3K winner as he covered the route in a time of 9 minutes, 37 seconds. Nelson also won the race last year and in 2014.

Ten-year-old Landon Smith earned top honors in the Kids’ 1K Fun Run as he ran the course in 3:46 to finish first among 15 entrants.
