EVERYONE INTO THE WATER — Swimmers head into the water of Sebec Lake in Dover-Foxcroft at the start of the 2012 PRYMCA Sprint Triathlon. This year’s event will take place on Saturday, July 13 with competitions for kids (in 8 and under and 9-13 age brackets) and adults.

For the second year the Y will also be offering a kid’s mini-triathlon. “We have two youth age categories. 8 and under and 9 to 13.” Deb Boyd, the Y’s executive director said. “This is a fun way for kids to get introduced to physical fitness and longer races. Kids can do it solo or form teams.”
The younger group will swim one lap in the pool, bike two miles, and run a half mile. The older group will swim two laps, bike two miles and run one mile.
The annual event has been growing every year and this year the Y hopes to break all previous attendance records, “This year we hope to see at least 75 and maybe upwards of 100 people participating.” Boyd said, “The Sprint Triathlon is a great format for people who may be new to triathlons and endurance events. For experienced racers, it’s a chance to improve their times and qualify for other races and events locally and nationally. We also have many competitors who only want to do one of the sections of the race and we are happy to help match people up to form their teams.”
Registration is open right up till the morning of the event, but Boyd suggests people get registered as soon as possible. People can register at the Y or by visiting www.prymca.org/events and following the links for the Sprint Triathlon.
“We’re thrilled to see this race grow over the years and bring people from around the state to Piscataquis County,” said Boyd. “The race would not be possible without the support of some great sponsors including Dover-Foxcroft Chiropractic Center, Family Eyecare and Triathlete Sports.”
Anyone wanting more information about the triathlon can call the Y at 564-7111 or stop in at 48 Park Street in Dover-Foxcroft. The Piscataquis Regional YMCA is a cause-driven organization that is committed to the community and dedicated to promoting healthy spirit, mind, and body for all, through programs and services grounded in Christian heritage and the core values of caring, honesty, respect and responsibility.
