Two hat tricks help Tigers roar past Orono in C North quarterfinal

DEXTER — The Dexter Regional High School field hockey team had little difficulty opening the 2017 Class C North tournament as the second-seeded Tigers defeated No. 7 Orono High School 7-0 in a quarterfinal matchup on Oct. 18. Senior Hayley Rossman and freshman Cheyenne Beem both scored three goals to help their team earn the victory.

Rossman would score the first two goals of the game within about three minutes of each other during the opening half. Junior Tory Asbury assisted on what would turn out to the game-winner at the 19:04-mark, and Beem assisted on Dexter goal No. 2 as she either scored or assisted on four of her team’s goals.

Beem had the first of her three goals with under five minutes to go in the first half.

In addition to the scoreboard, Dexter also dominated in penalty corners with a 16-1 advantage. The Tigers’ corners were split evenly between both halves (the lone Red Riot corner came in the last few minutes).

On the first such play of the second half, Rossman hit the ball in from the left to classmate Kaitlyn Webber. Webber received the pass and quickly dished the ball off to Beem. Standing near the penalty mark, Beem’s shot found its mark as Dexter went ahead 4-0.

Webber would become the third Tiger to record a goal less than a minute after Beem’s second. This scoring play came after another penalty corner.

Beem became the first of the two Dexter players to reach the three-goal mark. About a minute and half later Rossman equaled the the hat trick status of her teammate to finish up the day for the Tigers.

Junior Manda Haskell made one save in goal for Dexter. With just under two minutes to go sophomore Shawnee McNally came on in relief and she also stopped a shot to preserve the shutout.

The Tigers picked up the team’s 10th shutout in 15 games, and in these 15 contests Dexter has yielded only eight goals.

Red Riot junior Rosin Rumsey would make eight saves during her busy afternoon.

The win improved Dexter to 13-2, with the Tigers’ only losses coming against Class B North top seed Winslow High School. Orono’s season ended with a record of 5-10, going 1-6 to end 2017. Three of the team’s losses came against Dexter with the Tigers winning 9-0 on the road on Sept. 5 and defeating the Red Riots 4-0 in Dexter on Oct. 7.

Dexter advanced to the semifinal round for the 10th time in 11 seasons. The Tigers were scheduled to host third-seeded Boothbay Regional High School on Friday, Oct. 20. The Seahawks also came in with a record of 13-2, including a 2-1 quarterfinal victory over No. 6 Mount View High School of Thorndike. A member of the Mountain Valley Conference in central Maine, Boothbay has no mutual opponents with Dexter.
