Good leadership and good jazz in the ‘Big NO’

History tells us that every generation rewrites history and often repeats it. There are enough statues and counter statues today to warrant leaving them all intact. Strategic relocation of some statues erected by Jim Crow in front of Halls of Justice would be a good compromise by both sides. We don’t need to revere or hate the icons of the past.

New Orleans leads the way by leadership, discourse and by example in a place called Congo Square, a former slave market, that tolerates a statue of BT Beauregard. All within Louis Armstrong Park in a city 80 percent black, not without angst.

The truth will be served by the narrative history in thousands of books and films, public discourse, and honest leadership.
