Mikoud repeats as state discus champion

YARMOUTH — Foxcroft Academy senior Emily Mikoud successfully defended her state championship in the discus by winning the event at the 2017 Class B championship on June 3 at Yarmouth High School. Mikoud also came in second in the shot put to pick up all 18 points for the Ponies, placing the team in a tie for 16th place with Presque Isle High School among 28 schools.

Mikoud had a top discus throw of 119 feet, 1 inch besting event runner up Waterville Senior High School Sarah Cox by over nine feet. Mikoud’s first-place throw in 2017 ended up landing four inches further than her distance of 118-09 that gave her the 2016 Class B title.

Mikoud also took part in the 100 preliminary field. Her time of 13.66 seconds put her in 15th place among 32 competitors across four heats in the event.

Foxcroft freshman Olivia Wesley also took part in the state meet. Wesley ran in the 800 and she finished 16th with a time of 2 minutes, 40.47 seconds.

In the boys’ meet, senior Matt Storer of Foxcroft came in second in the shot and classmate Evan Chadbourne was third in the 100. The two Ponies’ 14 points put the team in 14th place among 28 schools.

Storer earned Class B shot put runner-up honors with a throw of 47-09.75, one inch behind the winning distance of 47-10.75 for Mount Desert Island High School junior Croix Albee. Storer also finished eighth in the discus at 111-02.

Chadbourne placed third in the 100 with a time of 11.54 seconds. He also ran the 200, finishing ninth in 23.60 seconds, and the first leg of the Foxcroft 4×100 relay team. Chadbourne, sophomore Chandler Dow, Storer and senior David Salley came in 19th in 48.79 seconds.

Dow took part in both hurdle events. He was 15th in the 110-hurdle prelims at 17.82 seconds and came in 22nd in the 300 hurdles with a time of 46.21 seconds.
