PVC freshmen championship

    BANGOR — Grade 9 students from Foxcroft Academy were among the athletes taking part in the 2013 Penobscot Valley Conference Freshmen Championship May 28 at Cameron Stadium (team scores were not kept).

    Cooper Nelson had the fastest time of the day in the 3,200 as he covered the approximate two miles in 12 minutes, 34.22 seconds. In second place was teammate Paul Birtwistle with a time of 12:59.93 and right behind him was Foxcroft’s Gabe Piquette in 14:03.93. Nelson also placed second in the 1,600 with a time of 5:02.85, just behind Brewer High School’s Kyle St. Thomas who ran the mile in 5:02.78.
    The Pony 4×400 relay finished in third place as James Smith, Blaine Robinson, Harry Gong and Nelson combined for a time of 4:36.98 — giving Nelson a trio of top three performances.
    Smith also came in sixth in both the 400 and 800 with times of 1:00.94 and 2:28.85 respectively. He placed eighth in the discus with a top throw of 58 feet, 2 inches.
    Harry Gong was eighth in the 200 at 28.27 seconds, and right behind in ninth place was Robinson with a time of 28.40 seconds. Birtwistle had another top 10 performance for Foxcroft as he was ninth in the 1,600 at 5:47.43.
    In the girls’ meet, Foxcroft’s Jennifer Clawson came in 12th in the long jump at 10-11.50. Clawson finished 20th in the 100 with a time of 16.18 seconds.
