Free Age-Friendly Dexter luncheon celebration May 30
DEXTER — One year ago, a group of Dexter citizens and people from bordering towns came together to form the Age-Friendly Dexter Committee to consider how to build a community that meets the needs of all ages from childhood to old age. People of all ages need access to safe and affordable housing, nutritious food and clean water, affordable services that allow them to continue to live in their homes, transportation, adequate handrails and ramp/elevator options to access services and businesses if necessary, walkable sidewalks, and opportunities for social participation and life-long learning experiences so that they can enjoy satisfying lives. While several of these needs are being adequately met, others need improvement for full inclusion. Older people are especially vulnerable to inadequacies that may occur in their community or homes due to lack of youthful mobility, finances, or transportation.
Nearly 300 people completed a survey over the last several months to determine what they would like to see improved in Dexter to make it an even more desirable place to live, work, and play throughout their lifespans.
On Wednesday, May 30 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the VFW Center on Cedar Street, Dexter citizens and those who live, work, shop, or recreate in Dexter are invited to the free Age-Friendly Dexter celebration luncheon. At the celebration, attendees will learn the results of the survey and can view the logo designed by the Tri-County Technical Center students. Andrew Bermudez will speak about the exciting Youth Work Camp program coming to Dexter in 2019 to help qualified homeowners with home improvements free of charge. Winners of $25 Hannaford or P & L food cards will be chosen through a drawing at this event.
The AARP Age-Friendly initiative is taking place in 50 communities from Caribou to Ogunquit throughout Maine. Indeed, Age-Friendly initiatives are happening throughout the country.
